Biaxial geogrid is an integrally formed, rigid mesh structure engineered for demanding soil stabilisation and ground reinforcement applications. Manufactured from polypropylene (PP) through a process of extrusion, longitudinal stretching, and transverse stretching, it delivers exceptional tensile strength in both the machine direction (MD) and transverse direction (TD). The result is a structurally stable, mechanically interlocking grid that effectively confines and reinforces aggregate layers under load.
Applications of Geogrid
Biaxial geogrid is suited to a wide range of civil and construction applications, including base reinforcement, subgrade reinforcement, slope reinforcement, and embankment stabilisation. It performs reliably under roads, driveways, parking lots, and retaining wall systems where load distribution and lateral restraint are critical.
How Geogrid Works
PP sheets are punched with apertures and stretched under heat, aligning the polymer molecules to create high tensile resistance. When aggregate is placed over the geogrid, the particles interlock within the apertures - acting like a snowshoe to distribute vertical loads over a wider footprint and prevent lateral migration of fill material.
Geogrid vs Geotextile – Understanding the Difference
Geogrids and geotextiles serve distinct but complementary roles. A geotextile is a fabric-like material whose primary functions are separation (preventing base rock from sinking into soft subgrade) and filtration (allowing water to pass while retaining fine soil particles). A geogrid is a stiff, open mesh whose primary function is reinforcement and stabilisation - it locks into gravel or crushed rock to bear and distribute heavy loads.
How Geogrid and Geotextile Work Together
When used in combination, these two materials form a complementary dual-layer system that significantly improves the performance and longevity of civil structures:
- Preventing pumping in roadways: Over weak or muddy subgrades, the geotextile separates mud from the gravel base while the geogrid locks the gravel together - preventing rutting and bearing capacity failure under traffic.
- Reinforcing retaining walls: For walls exceeding 1–1.2 metres, geogrid layers are embedded into the backfill to anchor the wall into the earth. A geotextile placed behind the blocks filters fine soil and protects the drainage system.
- Reducing excavation costs: The combined system achieves a stronger foundation with less imported rock and reduced dig depth - a meaningful saving on larger projects.
Specifications of Biaxial Geogrid
- Material: Polypropylene (PP)
- Structure: Integrally formed biaxial grid
- Tensile strength: High in both MD (longitudinal) and TD (transverse) directions
- Characteristics: Rigid and dimensionally stable
- Manufacturing process: Extrusion, punching, biaxial stretching under heat
Features & Benefits
- Biaxial tensile strength – Equal performance in both directions ensures consistent load distribution across the reinforced zone
- Mechanical interlock with aggregate – Apertures grip gravel and crushed rock, preventing lateral movement and rutting
- Polypropylene construction – Chemically inert, UV-stabilised, and resistant to biological degradation in soil environments
- Integral grid structure – No woven joints or bonded intersections; the grid is formed as a single continuous structure for long-term reliability
- Broad application range – Suitable for roads, driveways, parking areas, slopes, embankments, and retaining wall backfill
- Reduces material and excavation costs – Enables thinner aggregate layers and shallower dig depths without compromising structural performance
If you have a truck or large trailer and you'd like to collect, we can offer pick-up from several locations around NZ - please see our FAQ page for pick-up locations.
Reinforcing / Mesh / Merchant Bar & Engineering Steel Deliveries
Unless we provided you with a specific date, all steel products will usually ship out within 2-3 business days. All reinforcing bars or steel sections that need to be cut into shorter lengths or cut & bent might only be shipped within 3-5 days to allow for the factory to process your order, depending on the current workload.
Fencing, Waratahs & Barriers
Fencing / barrier products will usually ship out within 1-2 business days.
All our fencing / barriers deliveries are usually made via flat deck / curtain-side truck to our Customers' business or construction site. If you prefer offloading by hand, the truck will need to be offloaded within 15 mins. For larger orders our Customers need to provide a forklift / crane / digger / manitou to offload at site - alternatively please contact us if Hiab truck delivery is required.
Portaloo Hire
Due to their weight (almost 100kg) and difficulty to carry, all our portaloos will be delivered right next to the truck onto the ground via a tail lift. Please ensure that there is sufficient room for a truck to stop where you need the portaloo to be delivered.
Damages
Please inspect the packaging of your item(s) when they arrive, if you notice any damage you should make note of it when signing for delivery or do not agree to accept the delivery. If you do accept delivery you are required to immediately take photos using your smart phone or camera of the damaged packaging or products inside the packaging. If your item(s) do arrived damaged please send photos to support@savebuild.co.nz then visit our Easy Returns page and lodge your return claim online.

Q: How does shipping work?
A: Once you place your order it will ship out within 1-2 business days (cut & bent reinforcing will usually ship in 3-5 days). For large orders that are delivered by truck, we will communicate with you to find a suitable time that someone is available to receive the delivery. The driver will also give you a call when they are on the way with your delivery.
Delivery rates will be shown at check-out (please note these delivery rates apply to addresses within 40km from Metro centres). If you have received an error message during check-out, please fill in our GET A QUOTE form for a custom delivery quote.
Q: Where are you located - can I pick my order up somewhere?
A: Due to the size and weight of our products, most of our Customers prefer delivery to their construction site, business or home address. If you have a truck or trailer and you'd like to collect, we can offer pick-up from several locations around NZ - please see our FAQ page for details.
All pick-ups are processed via Click & Collect and must be paid for in advance so the warehouse can prepare your order. You’ll be notified when it’s ready (usually within a few hours) and issued with a reference number for collection. Please do not go to the warehouse without your reference number - they will not have your order ready for pick-up.
If you prefer to pick-up your order, please fill in our GET A QUOTE form and we'll send you a draft invoice for payment via e-mail.
Please note that your preferred item(s) might not always be available at your closest location - please check availability with our friendly team first if you intend to pick up.
Most of our products are heavy and bulky and often require forklifts, cranes or other lifting gear to load onto your vehicle / truck / trailer. We have witnessed many Customers arrive with uncertified vehicles, trailers that are too small, incorrect lifting and tie-down gear and also witnessed numerous safety incidents. Please ensure you have the correct size (certified) vehicle and tie down gear for your order to be safely loaded. If in doubt please reach out to our friendly team.
Q: Which payment options do you offer?
A: For most of our orders we will usually generate a draft invoice and e-mail it to you for payment via internet banking (this is the faster option). At this stage we don't operate on accounts or credit. We can also assist with credit card payments, but unfortunately this takes 3-4 days for the funds to clear (we use Shop Payments as our credit card processor). Please Contact Us to request a quote / draft invoice for payment via internet banking.
Q: I have issues with shipping rates at checkout, how can I get a delivery quote?
A: This usually means your address is located outside the areas that we normally deliver to. Flick us a quick message via Live Chat for a delivery quote or fill in our GET A QUOTE form to request a delivery quote.
