Farm Fencing

Farm fencing products provide robust perimeter security and livestock containment with weather-resistant construction built to withstand New Zealand conditions. From temporary site barriers to permanent boundary solutions, our galvanized steel systems offer reliable performance across rural properties, construction sites, and commercial developments.

Silt Fencing

Silt fencing delivers proven sediment management for earthworks and civil projects, using heavy-duty woven geotextile barriers that trap runoff and protect waterways while maintaining compliance with regional consent conditions. Choose standard silt fences for short-term applications or upgrade to reinforced Super Silt Fence systems for steeper slopes and higher-volume catchments.

SILT FENCES serve as entrenched vertical barriers flanking exposed soils or bordering construction perimeters - ideal for short-term, low-flow applications and smaller catchments.

SUPER SILT FENCES are used for steeper slopes, larger catchments, or higher-volume runoff, featuring double-layer fabric and wire mesh support for maximum strength and stability.

Key Requirements for Silt Fences (based on NZ guidelines):

  • Material: Woven 100-micron geotextile fabric is required; do not use shade cloth.
  • Depth: Dig a trench 200mm deep by 100mm wide, place the fabric in it, and backfill with soil.
  • Support: Use waratahs (posts) driven at least 400mm deep, placed on the downhill side.
  • Height: The fence should stand 600mm above ground level.
  • Positioning: Install on the downhill side of disturbed areas, with ends angled 2m up the slope to prevent water bypassing the fence.
  • Maintenance: Regularly inspect and remove accumulated sediment, and move as construction progresses.

Key Requirements for Super Silt Fences (based on NZ guidelines):

  • Fabric & Support: Use two layers of heavy-duty, woven 100 micron geotextile fabric.
  • Structure: Secure wire mesh and fence fabric to 1.8m (minimum) long Y-posts (Waratahs) spaced no more than 2m apart.
  • Tensioning: Install 2.5mm da (minimum) high-tensile (HT) galvanised wire at 400mm and 800mm height for support.
  • Trenching: Excavate a 200mm wide x 300mm deep deep trench. The fabric must be buried at least 300mm into the ground and backfilled.
  • Installation: Installed along the contour to manage sheet flow - not suitable for concentrated flows (i.e. not in watercourses or gullies).
  • Returns: Short fence returns (minimum 2m in length) must project upslope at intervals to prevent end-around flow.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspected and maintained; sediment must be removed when it reaches 50% of the fence height.
  • Stability: Ensure the fabric is supported and (if necessary) install safety caps on Waratahs.

Silt Fence vs Super Silt Fence:

Silt fences are temporary sediment barriers using single-layer, geotextile fabric on wooden / steel stakes for low-flow, small catchments. In contrast, Super Silt Fences are robust, high-strength, double-layer fabric systems reinforced with wire mesh or multiple fence wires and steel posts, designed for steeper slopes and higher-volume, larger-catchment runoff.

Both options use 100-micron woven geotextile fabric (never use shade cloth) and meet NZ guidelines for trench depth, post placement, and height specifications. Standard silt fences stand 600mm above ground with fabric buried 200mm deep, supported by waratahs driven 400mm into the soil. Super Silt Fences feature dual-layer construction with high-tensile galvanised wire tensioning, 300mm burial depth, and Y-posts spaced at 2-metre intervals for superior performance on demanding sites.

UV-resistant construction ensures durability throughout your project timeline, while proper installation with upslope returns prevents end-around flow. Regular inspection and sediment removal maintain effectiveness and help you avoid prosecution and on-the-spot fines for non-compliance. Whether you're managing a domestic landscaping project or a major civil works contract, our silt fencing range delivers reliable erosion control that protects sensitive aquatic environments and keeps your site operating within consent conditions.
