GIB Plasterboard

GIB® plasterboard is New Zealand's most widely specified internal lining material — locally manufactured, code-compliant, and engineered for the structural and environmental demands of NZ construction. Since 1978, plasterboard has served as a primary bracing element in residential buildings, making correct board selection a matter of structural integrity, not just finish quality.

Types of GIB® Plasterboard

Standard GIB® Board (10mm for walls, 13mm for ceilings) covers general internal lining applications. GIB Aqualine® features a distinctive green face paper and is specifically formulated for wet areas including bathrooms and laundries. GIB Fyreline® is an enhanced fire-rated board — typically 13mm or 16mm — designed to protect structural timber and satisfy fire safety requirements under the NZ Building Code. GIB Braceline® and GIB No. 10 are high-density boards engineered for structural bracing against lateral wind and seismic loads. GIB NoiseLine® provides sound attenuation between adjoining rooms.

Specifications of GIB® Plasterboard

Standard wall thickness is 10mm; 13mm is recommended for ceilings and applications requiring improved performance. Boards heavier than 10mm — particularly 13mm and 16mm Fyreline® — require stronger, more frequent, or specifically engineered fixings. GIB® plasterboard carries Declare label status, verifying it as non-toxic and sustainably manufactured. Elephant Plasterboard is an alternative brand that complies with AS/NZS 2588 for projects where a non-GIB® specification is required.

Uses of GIB® Plasterboard

GIB® plasterboard is specified for internal wall and ceiling linings, wet-area lining, fire-rated compartmentation, structural bracing, and acoustic separation. Installation must follow GIB® system specifications for fixing patterns, jointing sequences, and the required Level of Finish — Level 5 being the standard for high-sheen paint applications. In flood or water damage scenarios, a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) should be consulted to assess whether structural or fire-rated integrity has been compromised.
